Strategies for Effective Evaluation

Selecting News Articles for Commentaries - Where to start?
The link below allows you to examine a web site that organizes articles by economic topic and most recent date.  Remember that the article must be publsihed no earlier than one year from the date the commentary was written.

Sloman's Links to Economics News Articles
(use economics search terms i.e demand, tariffs, inflation etc... to find potentially relevant articles)

Google News
(examine links to other sources for potentially relevant articles)
While the above seems like the answer to your relentless quest for quality economics related news articles, consider that many of the articles are from international sources, which while acceptable, shouldn't prevent you from seeking out local and regional stories with Canadian links.   Recall: each article must be from a different source and each individual commentary must not exceed 800 words.
Of course, the Web Resources link has more available news media along with the resources below.......
Commentary Cover Sheet & Portfolio Cover Sheet
Please use this standardized cover sheet for each individual commentary.  Use this portfolio cover sheet when submitting your final commentary. (Note: make sure you accurately record all information from each commentary cover sheet onto your portfolio cover sheet)

A Useful Tool for Retaining Web Page Articles
Try this nifty tool for converting web pages to PDF files so that any articles you wish to use or save do not disappear months later when needed.  This tool could also be utilized to store a selection of articles related to a particular unit of study so that you can select the most appropriate article when your IA deadline approaches.  (Better to have, say, 5 to 6 articles relating to microeconomics in a folder on your USB drive ready for printing rather than having to search the Internet for relevant articles prior to an upcoming deadline)

Preparing for Your Commentary
IB economics students should use the planner below as a means of preparing for their commentary.  Please ensure that you have the following with you when discussing your commentary and article with Mr. Messere:

  • article^
  • completed commentary planner^  (this may be completed in point form)
  • questions you may have regarding key concept selection, analysis, application or evaluation

Please ensure that  these items^ are present during the conference.

Files/Forms Needed for Selected Portfolios via Online Submission (2022 and Onwards)
If your IA portfolio has been selected for moderation, please download and complete all fields in this interactive form (pending). (this form will be the cover page for each of your commentaries).   When done, save the file and submit it to Mr. Messere as an attachment via email (pat.messere@tdsb.on.ca) along with a separate attachment file for each individual commentary.  Ensure the email attachment uses the file name format: student name and commmentary number.  i.e samsmithcomm1  or samsmithcoverpage
